In modern electronics components can be defined as passive or active, and passive components feature two particular properties in common. Electrical power is not generated by passive components – power is dissipated in resistive components and unused power is stored in reactive components. Passive components also do not need a source of power to function, as they solely influence the flow of power – external power sources can’t change this electrical output.
